What is Food Fight?
Hunger is a complex issue. Rooted in geographical prospect and poverty, strengthened by neglect, it has grown to become one of mankind's most enduring and prevalent dilemmas. Around 800 million people are living in dangerous degrees of hunger, and over 21 thousand of these people will die from starvation each and every day. There is no simple solution to such a complex problem, but there is a place to start. Our world needs leaders: people who understand what it is to serve, what it is to lead, and who will give everything they have to fight for something they believe in. In 2008, 2 local high school students started an organization with the intent to develop these powerful leaders; they called it Food Fight. Food Fight is a student founded, student led organization dedicated towards developing confident and capable leaders by empowering high school
students to fight world hunger .
Food Fight begins each school year raising money through a number of fundraisers. Some of these include our annual Food Fight Benefit Concert, our spring dinner at La Sorella di Francesca, an assortment of events at local restaurants and businesses, and a number of activities within local high schools. All of this work raising money culminates in our annual packing week, when the money is used to buy specially formulated meals - dried chicken, dried vegetables, rice, and soy - from our partners Impact Lives. This food is then packed at several local high schools and sent to areas of need around the world. The coolest part about this week is that Food Fight invites every student in their school to pack food during their lunch period. It's amazing to see the amount of students who are willing to skip their lunches in order for someone else to eat!
Through this entire year of planning and organizing, discussing and arguing, promoting and rallying, speaking and executing, Food Fight leaders are given an extremely unique set of experiences. They work collaboratively with school administration and corporate offices, they organize fundraisers, and often times speak publicly. They become accountable for their responsibilities and to the students they lead. They are forced to push beyond the edge of their comfort, putting themselves out into the world in a way most students never have the chance to do. They learn when to be aggressive, to push when they need to, and when to try another avenue. They face opposition from adults, from students, and are forced to develop the grit and confidence to overcome their adversaries. Food Fight provides the unparalleled experience for high school students to learn how to make a difference, so when the time comes that they find something worth fighting for, they are equipped with the tools to succeed. Food Fight will never eradicate world hunger, but the students it creates today will have the power to do so tomorrow.
